h&m blouse

here we have my poor-man’s version of the marc jacobs runway looks posted here. i tried to maintain some of the sense of volume, and some of the colors. i wish this uniqlo skirt came in some bright shades, because i’d probably buy them all (i promise after today i’ll stop posting this skirt so much).

anyway, i know this isn’t going to pass for MJ, but i was happy with the approximation, especially because everything was fairly inexpensive. the skirt is from the jill sander for uniqlo collection, and the shirt is h&m. the minute i saw it, it made me think of the marc runway show, but i can also think of a million other ways i want to style it- including a likely-to-be MDAL look with my high-waisted velvet shorts.

i felt the need for a thick obi belt around my waist, but i don’t own one. the best i could do was cutting a piece from some scrap fabric noel gave me, and tying it around my waist. seeing it made me want to find a real obi belt. i know there are lots of google-able patterns for making your own obi belt out of fabric or leather with velcro, so i may give that a try. or, more likely, i’ll buy an obi belt on etsy or ebay out of laziness.

do you have any runway styles flagged for reinterpretation?

joelle van dyne: sister wife wardrobe remix

i mentioned last week that i had a 2nd purchase from the uniqlo +j line (other than the skirt in the post here), and that i needed some opinions on it. so here we have it- what i deem the “sister wife dress”- doesn’t it seem like something nicki would wear on ‘big love’? i was feeling a little iffy about it, since it is somewhat loose, and hits at mid-calf. i decided to try styling the dress a few different ways to see how versatile it would be, and here are the results!

this first look is the most obvious to me- simple summer shirtdress with strappy sandals and my favorite necklace to give the waist a little extra definition.

i wanted to see if i could make the dress wearable in the current in-between season, so i added some darker layers to tone down all the white. i think this look is the most ‘me’. (ps i will post a better photo of these shoes soon- just got them in the mail over the weekend on The Best Shoe Day Ever!).

as i went to put the dress back in the closet, i spotted my fur tank top, and thought it would be another option for layering. so, out it came. on the way to put it on, i saw my beaded vest hanging on my dressform, and threw that on too. i think the layering gives the dress a whole different feel, and it pretty much convinced me that it was a dress worth keeping.

what do you think? versatile dress, or too sister-wife-y? (and if so, which sister wife? i’m pretty okay with being Barb..) and one last question- how do you typically decide whether to keep a new purchase?

joelle van dyne: california i'm coming home ›

i’m back from LA, at work, in grey, snowy nyc. this morning is a rude awakening after my weekend in california. it was above 80 degrees every day, so i was wearing things like this:

american apparel maxi skirt

that’s right, a halter top. in january.

remind me, again, why i don’t live in LA?

gryphon fringe jacket

this jacket is pretty much for show. i brought it along in case i got chilly, but didn’t need it once!

i knew i’d have a good time this weekend, but didn’t expect how green and pretty LA would be, or how much i would like it there.

i’ve got work to catch up on now, so i’ll post more photos from the trip in a day or two.

see ya later! (sorry, i couldn’t help but post this creepster photo. thanks to mimi for taking these for me!)

joelle van dyne: sunny days

elizabeth & james blouse, tom binns earrings

wow, hard to believe these photos were taken just last weekend. every day this week has been dark and storming all day. but anyway, these were from last saturday on the way to birthday dinner.

elizabeth & james top, ysl velvet sandals

i was feeling very awkward for some reason. lately it seems that whenever someone other than myself or noel takes my photo, i become stiff and giggly and embarrassed all at the same time.

regardless, i was happy to be wearing this billowy blouse…

velvet ysl sandals, vintage ysl sandals

…and my velvet sandals.

tom binns earrings

after my last post, anjali, who knows me all too well, demanded that i give a run-down of my self-bought birthday presents. yes, it’s true. i get excited about my birthday like a 5 year old, and always end up presenting myself with multiple gifts. so behold: my new tom binns earrings. they are SO YELLOW.

tom binns earrings

it is a very unnatural color, and i love it. SO, there you have it- presents-to-self part 1. there will be more to come, probably next week. i’m very excited to say that the next time i post, it’ll be from OHIO! i’m going for a few days next week to visit my family and cannot wait.

joelle van dyne: star light star bright

first off, it is time to announce the winner of our sock theory giveaway! drumroll please…. the lucky new owner of a new pair of polka-dot over-the-knee socks is…

CHRISTEN, of la rue neuve! keep an eye out for our email today Christen!

reiss skirt

now onto my outfit, featuring yet another of my goodies from the brook & lyn closet swap- this white reiss skirt. i think if there was anything in that swap that had my name written all over it, it’s this skirt, which used to belong to pink horror show, who has just posted one of her swap items- go have a looksie!

rebecca taylor star blouse

it is actually maybe a little TOO perfect for me, in that i literally wore it 3x this past week. first i wore it on monday, because a new skirt takes away that monday-morning blues. then i wore it again on tuesday because i had a client meeting and was in a rush in the morning, and it was sitting there looking all pretty… then on thursday i just don’t have any excuse except for… why not stick with what’s working for you?

reiss skirt, zac posen bag

here’s a close-up of all the intricate pleated, pin-tucked glory. LOVE.

vintage ysl sandals

at least i wore a different shirt each time i wore this skirt. that makes me… not gross, right? right?! i felt a little self-conscious wearing this outfit, because i felt like i had on too many different colors. but then my boyfriend complimented it twice, which is very unusual, so maybe it was okay. looking at these photos, i must admit that really there are only 3 colors.

chanel jade

i think part of what threw me off was, for one, purple sandals- i usually stay away from purple. and also, the chanel jade polish on my toenails. i love this stuff, but wasn’t sure about wearing sucha  color polish with a colorful shoe.

ysl sandals

i love these sandals too much i had to post both photos of them. i have been creating an outfit in my head which incorporates these sandals, my velvet skirt, velvet e&j wizard-sleeve jacket and… i’m not sure what else. i need to decide on the right shirt to wear with all that heavy velvet. and also, i need somewhere to wear it- a magic show perhaps.
