joelle van dyne: nice day for a white wedding

lucilleduquette:

margiela shoes, prada shoes, shoe clips

this past weekend, i headed to naples, florida, for my little brother’s wedding. i meant to take some photos of the dress i saved up for the day, from erin fetherston (copycatted from kelly who wore it here). however, i spent the trip alternatingly having fun with my family, and sweating grumpily beneath many beach towels while they laid out in the sun. that left no time for photos.

i thought i would share a few pictures from the wedding day on barefoot beach. above are my shoes- some plain prada peep toes with added shoe clips, and my boyfriend’s margielas. we bought these on the same day at the same secondhand store.

here we are trying to see who can jump higher. there are other photos in which i’m trying to push him down so he can’t jump, but those didn’t look very graceful.

my sisters and i enjoy dressing up and making fools of ourselves.

my dad and i were fighting over who was going to look prettier in the photo.

the wedding was so beautiful. i wish i could post photos of my new sister-in-law walking down the aisle looking radiantly happy.. but here’s just one of her and my brother after the ceremony. it was a great day. in fact, it was so much fun that the next morning i said to my mom “i wish there was another wedding today!”, to which she replied “well… i sure WISH another one of my kids would get married. hint hint I MEAN YOU!!!” very subtle mom, very subtle.

joelle van dyne: we’re baaack!

michael kors coat

hello and happy new year! i hope you are all enjoying 2010 so far, and are not experiencing too much suffering over returning to work/school today after a nice long break.

i can’t believe it has been 2 weeks since our last post! the time really flew by. i didn’t mean to disappear for so long, but the minute i got to ohio, where i was visiting family for the holidays, i was struck with an awful case of laziness.

michael kors coat

now that i’m back in nyc, i’m realizing it’s going to be pretty tough to keep taking photos for the blog for the next month or so- it is FREEZING! i’m going to need to find some indoor locations with decent lighting to take my photos for awhile, because standing outside in the ice and snow is just not going to cut it.

fortunately, it was not to bad on new year’s eve, so snapping a few shots of my outfit wasn’t difficult. this michael by michael kors coat is a few years old, and is a reminder to myself to never buy a winter coat until spring. i got this one over the summer for around $40, which was a pretty big markdown.

whenever i wear this jacket, i think of the little girl and/or scary goblin woman from the movie ‘don’t look now’, and i worry i’m going to frighten people if i turn a corner too quickly on the street. in my mind this is somehow a good thing.

oh, and i think i have to confess here- i am wearing nars ‘heat wave’ lipstick to match my coat, and the reason i own this lipstick is because i saw a boy wearing it on brooke’s blog. he looked really beautiful in this color, so i copied it. yes, i am taking makeup advice from a dude’s halloween costume. awesome.

vintage rhinestone dress, ruffle skirt, nude boots

anyway, here is the new year’s eve outfit hidden under my scary red coat. the spangled top/dress was a vintage find- one of my favorites of the past year. i love how the nude color balances out the massive amount of sequins. in this shirt, with my nude boots and glittery shoe clips, i felt like i blended right into the snowy landscape.

i had the idea of throwing some snowballs at my man-friend/photographer, and making some kind of a moving slideshow out of them where it would look like an old-fashioned movie. but unfortunately i’m not that technically advanced.  if you scroll down quickly over the next series of photos, maybe you’ll still get an illusion of apparent motion.

that looked just like a movie, did it not?! one of these days i’ll learn to make a gif.

so, have you all made any fashion-related resolutions for 2010? i think i’m sticking with a lot of the same ones i made in 2009. i would like to:

-shrink my wardrobe- keep versatile, interesting pieces that can be mixed and matched, and get rid of anything that’s boring/unflattering/not my style etc. etc.

-make more stuff- my mom got me a dress form for xmas- i’m SO excited! i think it’ll make sewing and tailoring easier. i also got a knitting project as a gift from my boyfriend’s mom that i’m excited to try. and i’ve been working on a few necklaces too. it’s always fun to wear something i’ve worked on myself, so i want to do a lot more of that.

-by fewer things that i really love, as opposed to basics and cheap thrills. i want to try saving up money for fewer items that are super special. i HATE when i’m tempted by a designer vintage gem, but can’t buy it because i’ve already spent my fashion budget on a bunch of blah items from jcrew or forever 21.

and yes, i have a list going of those few pieces i’d like to acquire this year. it’s a very short list right now, containing….

the chloe paraty: i’m thinking about black leather, but i’m not totally sure of the color yet. and mine definitely won’t be python- it’s gorgeous, but no way can i afford it!

chloe paraty

aaand these amazing, drool-worthy miu miu shoes (the ones on the left). i’ve been dreaming of these babies since fashion week. i don’t even think they’re available for purchase yet, but when they are, they WILL BE MINE *maniacal laugh*.

so there you have it- my rules for 2010. wish me luck in sticking to them!

joelle van dyne: with bells on her toes

anyone with even the most minute knowledge of my fashion sense can attest to the fact that i like to decorate things. my style is not simple, or minimalist, or effortless. rather than wearing 1 ring, i wear about 8 on any given day (sometimes several on the same finger). i pile on bangles. i add ribbons and bows and brooches to my jackets. i replace plain buttons with sparkly ones. i always have a lace slip peeking out from under a skirt.

but i have never decorated my shoes. it just never occurred to me! that is, until last week when i received some shoes clips from absolutely audrey

loeffler randall emmy

i mean, what an idea! how is it that i never felt the gaping void in my wardrobe where shoe clips needed to be?! and clearly, these clips are the gift that keeps on giving- now that i have them i’m brainstorming all the various ways in which to make my boots and shoes better (because better = bedazzled).

for brunch on saturday, i spruced up an otherwise dull ‘weekend ballerina’ look by clipping these beauties to my loeffler randall boots, and stringing a rhinestone necklace around the ankle.

for a dinner party, i donned an accidentally kinda sorta gothic lolita esque ensemble (note to self: white lace + white petticoat + white skirt + baby pink shoes may not be the best mix). i verrry seldom wear these thrifted givenchy heels- they’re pretty hard to walk in. the heel is very high, and they’re about a full size too big (which might actually be a good thing, since i can fill them with pads). so they have sat in my closet forgotten for quite some time.

but imagining how cute the shoes would look with a little extra sparkle gave me the extra push i needed to limp around in them for a night. and i’m glad i did- i’m getting more accustomed to them. i really like the combination of the overly pointy toe with the hoof-like heel.

now this might be one negative aspect of the fabulous shoe clips: on self-proclaimed ‘casual thursday’ last week, i hastily threw on ripped jeans and some old dirty converse, BUT felt like i was looking all cute and dressy because i rhinestone-ified the sneakers.

nothing sloppy about this outfit, right??

anyway, i’m very thankful to absolutely audrey for this wonderfly glittery gift, which is making me feel like all my old shoes are new. and if you’re interested, these clips are the “wish” design on the site. i now have my eyes set on the “katerina” and the “eva”- i’m imagining the possibilities of wearing not one but SEVERAL clips on each shoe. i’m realizing that a girl can never have too much shoe bling.
