NYFW: advanced style + tavi gevinson

advanced style

earlier this week, i headed over to the ace hotel for the tavi gevinson + advanced style party.  new york fashion week can be pretty overwhelming, and this time i really only picked and chose the events/parties/shows that i really thought would be interesting and unique.  after meeting and hanging out with the lovely and inspiring tavi a few years ago at the weardrobe conference, AND loving the advanced style blog, i was excited both of these groups are coming together for a spectacular party. even though there are generations between the two, i think tavi fits in just perfectly.

marc by marc jacobs fall 2011

one of the biggest highlights of fashion week was attending the marc by marc jacobs show.  i absolutely loved it!  everything that walked down the runway, i could see myself wearing.  it had a complete 70s look with silky dresses in gorgeous colors and prints, big floppy hats, and lovely trenches.

afterwards, when we met up with the tumblr group, almost everyone was talking about this perfectly hued bright green dress!  so simple and lovely…but unique in this bold color.  i also adored the following look with the silky scarf-bow over the double-breasted coat. completely diy-able with things i already own.

another favorite among the group was this shorts/blazer set - so adorable…especially with the rust and brown colors with the floppy hat.

and finally, marc at marc by marc jacobs.

chris benz fall 2011

during fashion week i was lucky enough to go backstage at the chris benz show, which was pretty spectacular.  the collection was stunning — 70s inspired with super long wide-leg pants, layers and layers of all kinds of textures (silks, sequins, fur), long flowing dresses, and elegant looking girls who slightly resembled scarecrows with their lean forms and eye-covering hats.

before the show, we hung out backstage while the models had their makeup done and all of the show started coming together.  then, we headed  out to the floor before the crowd got there, and watched while chris benz came out and put the finishing touches on all of the models, adjusting hats, snipping off pieces of the clothes that obviously needed to be snipped.

my favorite things about the show were the mixture and balance of textures — silky florals mixed with suede and fur…and the pretty shoes with the matching prints from the dresses.

fashion week / alice + olivia fall 2011

it seems like months have gone by since fashion week started.  all in all it was nothing short of amazing, and we’ve got lots to post about.  the coverage here has been a bit sparse because i didn’t want to miss a minute of anything going on, which left very little spare time…all of which i spent sleeping in order to wake up to crazy days all over again the next morning.  after returning to real life on thursday, i’ve been a little sick, and  staying in bed and drinking tea has been all i’ve wanted to do for the past few days.  now, after a few days of rest i’ve pulled out my photos and started sorting for the posts….which you’ll be seeing around here for a few days.

on valentine’s day, we headed up to the Plaza for the Alice + Olivia fall 2011 presentation.  it was a sparkly presentation, from the glitter 1920s inspired outfits, to the champagne, to the baby grand piano at the center of the room.

i loved how decadent it all felt.  the rich rusts and taupes of the clothes, chocolate being served on silver trays, and my favorite — a lovely pair of red platform mary janes with a striped heel.

noel vallens: dinner with simon

barneys with simon doonan

last night, simon doonan hosted a little intimate, cozy dinner for us at barney’s restaurant, fred’s.  it was a completely perfect night. i really had no idea what to expect, but everyone, including…especially… simon, was so incredibly nice, witty, smart, gracious and funny. simon held a little Q&A session with amanda brooks from barneys, and i think joelle summed it up pretty nicely.

dinner itself was spectacular. simon visited rebecca, erin, jessica and I and told us about his love for ed hardy (and even has a pink ed hardy phone cover to prove it) and gave us career advice.

in any case, enough about the dinner and on with the outfit.  this was my ‘pretty’ outfit for the week, also known as my ballerina outfit. a pretty vintage skirt and i’m sad that you can’t see the amazing details on this lovely lace blouse.

alright, i’m off to get ready for more events and shows.  we’ll be posting soon with our day with nina garcia…and oscar de la renta!!  aaah…
