last week i posted one of my ‘professional lady’ outfits on the blog, and got a few comments that you’d like to see more office-wear here. so, i am following through with that- noel took these photos for me at lunch yesterday, in what we call the “magic spot”- a slice of sidewalk between 2 busy streets where the light makes us look approximately 100x more smooth-skinned and attractive than we actually are. i wish i could bask in this spot all day.

anyway, this is another of my typical ‘i have a meeting and can’t dress like a slob or wizard today’ outfits: silk dress, jacket/cardigan, and a bag that fits my computer. the double-leopard patterns were unintentional. i prefer this combo to a pencil skirt + blouse duo because i feel less stuffy if i wear it out after work.

since i live in nyc and work in a semi-creative industry, i don’t ever have to be too formal. my office is in the financial district where, even in the current 80 degree weather, i see people running around in full suits and HOSE. i pity them until i remind myself their salary is probably 10x mine. how dressy do you have to be for work?

i’m going to keep this post very quick today. i’m trying to finish my work at a fevered pace so i can enjoy a ‘summer friday’ schedule. i wore this outfit to a work meeting earlier in the week. i’ve had the jcrew dress in my closet for probably 2 years without ever wearing it. i had wanted it for the longest time based on the nice catalogue photo, and finally my mom got it for me as a gift. in person, the dress that i was led to believe would be a perfectly fitted silk shift dress, was actually a silk sack. now, suddenly, i kind of like it that way.

i usually hate posting work outfits, but that has been the reality of the past week. the lipstick i’m wearing is a new one- laura mercier’s tangerine- and i really enjoy it. it isn’t so over-the-top orange like a lot of lipsticks are this summer, and while it is bright, it’s a little less intense than the standard red. with the outfit i’m giving off a ketchup and mustard vibe, but i promise the lipstick is worth a try.

i think this is a pretty granny-esque way of wearing a pashmina scarf, but it just might be my favorite way. i have a major attachment to blankets. growing up, it was a standard thing in my house to be wrapped in an afghan at all times, and it’s a habit i’ve never broken. i keep a blanket at work, and have several scattered across my apartment so i can always reach for one, no matter where i’m sitting. i think a big knit pashmina comes as close to an acceptable-to-wear-in-public blanket as possible.

i’ve coveted a few marc jacobs scarves that are very large and very heavy, and to be honest i don’t know what separates them from blankets. hopefully one of these days i can get one.

prada peep toe booties

alright, on to the shameful part of this outfit. just a few weeks ago i was railing against peep-toe booties (well, maybe not railing so much as mentioning). but really. they’re ridiculous, like something out of zoolander. they’re uncomfortable. the bizarre toe hole is a surefire way to ruin an otherwise great boot.

AND YET. here i am wearing an oldie-but-goodie from 2006. i guess what i forgot to mention is the #1 way, in my book, to turn a fashion ‘don’t’ into a ‘do’. it’s simple really: you just slap a “prada” or a “miu” on it, and i’m sold. shameful but true.

i still think these boots should be closed up. i can hardly wear them because either my foot is sweating or my toes are freezing, so i’m now plotting about sewing leather patches onto the toes of some socks, and wearing them under the boots. and till then, i will refrain from my peep-toe mockery.

i’ve been wearing this hooded coat a lot lately since there’s been rain on and off, and i think it’s having quite an effect on what i wear underneath. any time i try to add the slightest bit of red to an outfit, i got way overboard and wear every shade of red in my closet.

i picked up this printed tee shirt intending to only wear it to bed, but it quickly wormed its way into my everyday outfits. i ended up wearing it on the weekend to brunch, and then again to work on monday. i’m crazy about the print- trees in cotton candy colors, and little blue gnomes walking through the forest.

philip lim wallet, philip lim wristlet

i’ve never had any desire to own a little wristlet until i saw this one in a consignment shop. the leather seems too delicate to use it as a wallet in my messy bag, so i’ve attempted leaving my bags behind. i end up stuffing loads of stuff into my coat pockets- tissue packs, phone, lipgloss, pen, keys, etc. etc. i don’t know how the young kids manage to carry wristlets regularly, but i know my little sister is obsessed with them. i think next i’m going to clip this thing to my regular purse. i’ll call it a Meta Purse, and i’m 99% sure this term is going to catch on. big time.
