noel vallens: orange sherbet

j brand orange jeans

this past weekend, we spent four lazy days at the beach house.  i think we did everything remotely american that we could think of.  eating pizza and making homemade chipwiches (best thing EVER) before heading over to the really creepy local carnival and winning stuffed animals and framed pictures of white tigers.  catching the fireworks in greenport, and then again (sort-of) in brooklyn.  at this point, i don’t think i’ll be able to eat another grilled hamburger for a long time.

on saturday, we hopped two ferries (in the car!) over to the south fork and cruised through the hamptons over to montauk for the annual ‘epic yard sale’ by the owners of melet mercantile. the first thing i noticed was a table setup in the front by a little girl (about 8 years old) selling friendship bracelets.  she was such a professional little businesswoman!  when i asked if she made them, she said, “no, they were handmade by a family in mexico.”  and after suggesting a few different color schemes that she thought i would like, i bought one and she shook my hand saying “it’s been a pleasure doing business with you.”  she also showed us her miniature camper/trailer set up in the front yard which was her room!

the outfit was perfect for montauk’s little beach town.  i’ve been sort of obsessed with bright jeans lately, so i was so excited when these little j brand orange jeans showed up on my doorstep.  they are so incredibly soft and the most striking orange.  at first i was a little worried having the right thing to wear them with (they are SO orange) but now, i’m realizing they pretty much go with anything.

noel vallens: R.I.P tote bag….R.I.P.

if music on a website weren’t so annoying, you’d be hearing the most tear-jerking,  rendition of the wind beneath my wings you’d ever heard. today is the day i said goodbye to a good friend.

you may have noticed that since we’ve had this blog, joelle always has the perfect purse for every outfit. when i went to her apartment for the first time, i was sure there had to be a secret wing or hidden room of just PURSES somewhere. compare this to my obvious void of a purse. in almost every single post, there’s nary a purse to be found. this is because….i don’t carry one.

i have a tote bag, which i got from my old job………6 years ago. i’ve carried it almost religiously since. so, while i pose for pictures, my trusty tote bag sits patiently off to the side, trying to pretend that I don’t ignore it during EVERY photoshoot. sure…i’ll go through a period where I’ll find a bag that I think is going to be The One to put an end to this tote bag nonsense….

.

you’ll remember the black and white bag…. and the brown bag… but for some reason, as i’m getting ready to leave the house…the tote bag beckons me with its roominess; its ability to carry my extra shoes, sweatshop-in-a-bag knitting projects, and groceries home from the market; its ability to never ever show a smudge of dirt; and its way of always tucking itself under my arm on a crowded subway.

ANYWAY, the generous folks over at Coach have offered to put my tote bag out of its misery by tempting me with this very pretty and very roomy kristin tote.

since the Coach bag showed up on my doorstep, my tote was tucked away and i don’t even flinch when walking out of the door.

this coat is a recent purchase from etsy.  it really is bright orange, which is normally a color i don’t wear much.  but i loved the cut of this coat with it’s cute a-line swingy-ness, and side-placed-buttons.

and to make the coat as toned down as possible, i paired it with the creamiest and ruffliest shirt and cream colored boots.

i piled on a few layers of vintage gold necklaces and lockets.  the biggest one there with the blue jewel is one of my favorite new purchases.  it’s a vintage perfume necklace…that came with 25 year old perfume in it…in solid form.  and it smells like something my grandmother would think was ‘really fancy’.  so, i tried scraping all of it out, but it still has the hint of fancy-grandma smell to it.  when i wore it and told joelle to smell it, she exclaimed, “oh!  i love that smell.  i try to buy everything that smells that way.” revealing that joelle is actually an 80-year-old woman.
