joelle van dyne: nothing matters when we’re dancing

not much to write in addition to these photos! i had so much fun at the jazz age lawn party on governor’s island yesterday.

after over a week of not posting, i’m back! sorry about our unplanned absence. noel is on vacation right now, and i just got through one of the most trying weeks ever. just one of the many unfortunate events that occurred was burning my hand on a toaster, causing me to drop my precious little laptop and ruin it beyond repair. but now i’m back up and running, with a larger and more rugged laptop, and can finally post again.

the highlight of my terrible week was a perfect saturday afternoon spent on governor’s island with my girl friends, where we attended the jazz age lawn party.

it was such a happy occasion! there were picnic blankets strewn all over the lawn, which was covered in a canopy of tree branches, with the sunlight filtering through. nearly everyone had dressed to the nines for the occasion.

hands down the star flapper of the day was daphne! we couldn’t walk 5 feet without someone stopping to compliment her and ask to take her photograph. she just happens to own a full wardrobe of 1920s attire, including this intricate hat.

my own getup completely paled in comparison to most. i crafted this dress out of a giant thrift store muu muu back in high school, and figured the drop waist would work for the 1920s theme, along with various thrifted strings of pearls, and a feather handband from zara i’ve been dying to wear.

since most of the costumes at the party were better than my own, i’m not going to belabor my own outfit today; rather, i’ll bombard you with pictures of various people who caught my eye. just look at this woman’s hat!

red shoes times two.

more pops of red.

i wished i had thought to bring along some little white gloves like this girl did.

a swirling dress, and bright yellow pants. these pants were incredible.

another view of The Pants.

i loved how the men were just as into the dress-up theme as the women.

i wonder if most of them wear these clothes all year.

the band leader looked especially dapper.

even children were dressed in period-appropriate outfits!

i wish every day in new york city could be just like this.

it ended all too soon. but luckily, this is an annual event- i’ll be back next year for sure.

i wasn’t the only one not ready to leave- some couples kept right on dancing, long after the music was over.
