noel vallens: time for a picnic

working 15 hour days, through the weekends, for days and days on end is NOT fun.  i took a little break this weekend for a picnic.  and i wore some clothes.  now….back to work!  hope your week is more enjoyable than mine!

noel vallens: interlude

hey guys!  it is a big wet mess outside, and i wanted nothing more than to stay home, but since i haven’t really left the house in 24 hours i thought i’d venture into work today.

this weekend, i started panicking a little about upcoming fashion week (so excited! we’re in the tumblr 20!) and throwing things around my room trying to pull together 1 outfit, not even considering the 20 more that i’ll have to prepare before then.  frantic online shopping ensued, followed by obsessive jewelry-making.

in this process, i started going through the boxes of to-alter clothes and pulled out quite a few things that i wanted to shorten the hemline on last year, but realized were pretty good length this season.  finally my sewing procrastination is beneficial.

the dress was a little something i traded for on etsy a very long time ago.  the shoes are purely for indoors/at work….as i’ll be traipsing around out there in my winter boots today. have a great short week!

noel vallens: weekender

between the beach and the city, i feel like i’ve been living a double life for the past few weeks.  busy city life ~~ playing house in the countryside ~~ mass commute on the subway ~~  laying in the sun on the beach, living in my bathing suit.  between all of the back and forths, i’ve learned how to pack light and pack well.

so, today i thought i’d post two outfits….things that i’ve frantically thrown on as i’m heading out the door for a weekend trip.  most of the time these days i’m dressing down more…to be honest, i love dressing down just as much as i dress up.  i’m just as at home in a pair of jeans as a silk dress.   and these days, i’m wearing a lot more shorts.

nothing fancy with this is a pair of cut-off vintage high-waisted corduroy shorts that are super-duper comfortable and go with anything.  but the favorite part of this outfit, that i pretty much built everything else around were these new steven alan ikat keds.  red is my favorite color of all, and ikat is just so striking.

…and my vintage faux-gucci-looking bag.  i came across this one on etsy and couldn’t resist it.  i am addicted to buying weekend bags, like other girls are purses.  only, weekend bags take up more space, and you don’t exactly use them every day.

which brings me to my second outfit.  sometimes the nights get a bit chilly, so i’ve been wearing jeans/denim leggings a bit, and my go-to item has been to grab a shirt out of the boyfriend’s closet.  after staring at my closet for too long, and getting tired of the same stuff, it’s so fun to look into someone else’s and have your pick.

with a boy’s shirt, i always want to add in something girly like tall heels or wedges.  and just a pretty straightforward and simple outfit, but perfect for lounging weekends.

noel vallens: lemon coconut pie

happy tuesday!  hope you all had a wonderful long holiday weekend (if you’re in the US, that is).  my extra long weekend it was filled with barbecuing non-stop, laying in the grass, lounging in an inflatable martini pool, starting an impromptu dance party, hiking down beach trails, spinning at carnival rides, eating fried oreos, and watching amazing fireworks.  it was such a fun weekend, that….i took no outfit photos!  well, almost….just a single photo before the crazy heat hit this weekend!  this is just me, lounging in the back yard with a bit of denim on denim.

AND, given this intense heat….i wanted to share one of my latest obsessions.  making my own deodorant.  which, i know sounds really odd.  i came across this deodorant recipe on the blog how about orange, and decided that i had to make this.  there’s no scary aluminum, it works amazingly well, and it smells like lemon coconut pie!  i’m now obsessed and started making it for all of my friends.

this is the original recipe:

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder (as a thickening agent)
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 10 drops/shakes grapefruit essential oil
  • A tin or jar with lid

however, i made up the first batch and realized my skin is just a tad too sensitive for baking soda….and ended up making other batches that are baking-soda-free and it works just as well.  i also ended up adding in a few more than 10 shakes of the grapefruit oil just because it smells so good.

to make it, just mix everything together and store it in a jar or tin, then apply it once daily with your fingers like lotion.  its consistency does change based on temperature (becomes more liquid-y in higher temps) so you can store it in the refrigerator to keep it solid.  and i was able to pick up all of the ingredients at whole foods.  let me know if you decide to try it!

noel vallens: summer coral

hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend!  today, instead of just one look, i’ve got four different looks featuring summery, silky and sparkly pieces.

the first look is a perfect spring/summer transition day outfit pairing a coral silk tank with high-waisted jeans and tall caramel sandals.  usually when the weather starts to get warm, it takes me a while to ease into wearing bare-all shorts and tanks, so i like to pair items with a bit more coverage with some fun summery items.  the bright, fun color of the tank gives it a nice summer feel.

this look is something I’ve been picturing in my mind since i bought these leggings and cardigan…but for some reason it needed the final piece to pull it all together.  with the leggings, i knew i wanted a long tunic to hide under but not something too bulky….and the brightness and silkiness of the tank brings it all together.

this look is perfect for beachy daywear.  long flowy layers and the bright tank mixed with neutral shorts and cognac sandals.

and finally, this last look is a fun evening look…with the tank tucked into a high-waisted floor length flowy black skirt and cage sandal heels.
