noel vallens: stripes extravaganza

vintage striped skirt and cynthia vincent boots

i don’t know what my obsession with stripes has been lately, but it’s all i’ve been knitting (or thinking about knitting lately) and i’ve bought not one, but two, black and white striped bottoms (this skirt and another pair of pants). maybe i just have a deep rooted desire too look like a circus clown/beetlejuice.  by the way, i can’t wait to post the pants….just like the pattern on the skirt but pants, in a 70s style flare cut.  serious circus pants.

i’m also kinda obsessed with these cynthia vincent booties.  i feel like since 90% of my closet is vintage, or either vintage-inspired, some outfits can start to look more like a decade-specific costume.   i’ve found that these little boots are the perfect answer because they are not vintage in the least and tend to add a little bit of modernized flair.  not to mention, that i tend to not do heels very well….but i walked around in these things for hours and hours days on end during fashion week, and couldn’t believe how comfortable they were.

and finally, this is my current (project) obsession.  i’m making a pattern for a summer striped sweater.  it’s summery because it will be cap sleeved & made out of this velvety cotton.  i can’t wait til it’s done!! i actually woke up this morning with a sore forearm muscle from knitting so much yesterday.

noel vallens: naughty and nice

so, i have this leather skirt in my closet that i’ve been trying to challenge myself to wear in casual daytime outfit.  night-wear is easy for a leather mini skirt, but toning it down so you don’t look like you’re wearing last night’s clothes is a different challenge.

i decided that a pretty baby pink ruffle shirt with a school-girl collar was the perfect balance to a leather mini.  i threw on a loungy cardigan and some cutout flats to tone it down even a bit more.  and in all honesty, i haven’t yet switched out my winter closet so i’m only working with summer time clothes here.  hence the somewhat summertime cutout flats.

also, about a week ago, my mom snuck into my favorites on etsy and surprised me by buying up a whole bunch of things as an early birthday present.  isn’t she the best??  these rustic hoop earrings (my favorite out of the bunch) are completely adorable.  i love the little brass shapes and that the color of wire is dark and not overly shiny.  i’ve been wearing them almost every day since they arrived.

noel vallens: bathed in light

long time, no post!  for days last week, i’m not even sure i saw daylight some days from working non-stop, but was finally able to catch up on things this weekend.  so, after days of anticipation, i’m sure, i’ve got some fuzzy photos for you.  i was out taking these when some guys had the nerve of hanging out of MY sidewalk (!) right in my usual photo spot.  and the sun was setting.  and my battery light was flashing.  talk about pressure!

lately i’ve been wearing lots of brown earthy hues…and whenever i find something i like, i usually wear it until i’m sick of it.  and this has been my uniform…or some variation of it.  long vintage silk tunic with lots of layers of bronze and beaded necklaces, dark denim leggings and granny shoes.

noel vallens: stripes forever

today it’s so lovely out and i have no work, so this post is going to be short and sweet so i can get outside!   i saw this jumpsuit on etsy a few months back, and bookmarked it thinking, do i REALLY need a full suited romper?  a few weeks later, after rummaging around in my favorites, i re-discovered it, and that it was on sale, so without even looking at the measurements (eeks!) i bought it.

i was pleasantly surprised by this little number.  first, the fit is incredible!  with rompers, torso length is critical and i got very lucky.  second, it’s more adorable in person than the fuzzy photos i was looking at on etsy.

i do love this thing, but the first time i wore it i had the eerie feeling that it reminded me of something.  then i figured it out.  this romper is the lovechild of a car mechanic and beetlejuice.  yikes!

and, today i’m also wearing my new cutler and gross of london shades that i picked up in greenport.  i love their thick frames, and the shop seller said that she had a pair, made by the same brand, that lady gaga wears!  if only i’d gotten there a few hours earlier!

and with the lady beetlejuice outfit, i stacked up lots of silver bangles and rings.  have a great weekend!

noel vallens: lemon coconut pie

happy tuesday!  hope you all had a wonderful long holiday weekend (if you’re in the US, that is).  my extra long weekend it was filled with barbecuing non-stop, laying in the grass, lounging in an inflatable martini pool, starting an impromptu dance party, hiking down beach trails, spinning at carnival rides, eating fried oreos, and watching amazing fireworks.  it was such a fun weekend, that….i took no outfit photos!  well, almost….just a single photo before the crazy heat hit this weekend!  this is just me, lounging in the back yard with a bit of denim on denim.

AND, given this intense heat….i wanted to share one of my latest obsessions.  making my own deodorant.  which, i know sounds really odd.  i came across this deodorant recipe on the blog how about orange, and decided that i had to make this.  there’s no scary aluminum, it works amazingly well, and it smells like lemon coconut pie!  i’m now obsessed and started making it for all of my friends.

this is the original recipe:

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder (as a thickening agent)
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 10 drops/shakes grapefruit essential oil
  • A tin or jar with lid

however, i made up the first batch and realized my skin is just a tad too sensitive for baking soda….and ended up making other batches that are baking-soda-free and it works just as well.  i also ended up adding in a few more than 10 shakes of the grapefruit oil just because it smells so good.

to make it, just mix everything together and store it in a jar or tin, then apply it once daily with your fingers like lotion.  its consistency does change based on temperature (becomes more liquid-y in higher temps) so you can store it in the refrigerator to keep it solid.  and i was able to pick up all of the ingredients at whole foods.  let me know if you decide to try it!
