diane von furstenberg pants

though i’m walking in prospect park wearing these crazy palm tree/marijuana leaf pants, i feel that the pants would be more at home in a florida retirement community, playing bocce ball or bingo.

these dvf beauties border on pajamas- they’re light linen with a drawstring waist, perfect on a hot day. i found them secondhand during the winter, and would you believe the tags were still on?! this is an older dvf print, so i know they’ve been languishing un-worn for several years. i wonder why..

on an un-related note, have you noticed how my hair is looking remarkably less flat in these photos? i posted awhile back about being treated to a day at edris salon, and promised i’d be back there for a haircut. i finally visited ronnie there recently, who did a great job of giving some life to my limp hair. he also gave me loads of helpful styling tips, both for lazy and non-lazy days. i’ve been following his advice of putting a little bit of mousse into my hair when it’s wet, and twisting it tightly away from my face (leaving the ends alone), so that it dries into loose curls.

today i decided to try his tips for non-lazy days, and used hot rollers- again, leaving the ends of my hair un-curled. though it obviously isn’t very curly in these photos, it did have a lot more volume all day. i has taken me years to find a hair stylist i really like, so i just had to mention how wonderful edris salon is- and particularly ronnie!

maybe next time i’ll ask him how to style my hair for a day of bocce in boca.

i hope you all had a nice long weekend! mine was just perfect. i walked all over sunnyside to look at the gardens in bloom, attended 2 picnics, saw ‘bridesmaids’, sat in central park with my girl friends making bracelets, and i wore this crazy sonia rykiel dress. i really like things that walk the line between ‘regular clothes’ and ‘costume’. the sparkly pailettes make me very happy.

i also left the home without a proper purse, which is something i haven’t done in many years. it felt weird, and then i felt weird for feeling weird about it. i just didn’t feel like any of my bags matched this dress.

i bought this bracelet in a shop across from my favorite indian food restaurant, and was excited to find it in the back of my jewelry box. i thought it was going to be my perfect summer accessory, but by the end of the day, all the colorful fuzzy bits had fallen apart, and i was left with a white thread around my wrist. it was nice while it lasted!

queens comfort donuts

though i’ve been trying to eat healthier for awhile now, i used my glittery dress as an excuse to eat some donuts at queens comfort- the ‘funfetti’ donut matched my outfit so well! and, well, the cinnamon sugar donut just looked good.

queens comfort french toast

while i’m on the subject of food, i had a lot of good stuff this weekend. aside from the donuts, i had this cornbread french toast, cotton candy, several sponge bob square pants ice cream bars (a frequent summer indulgence), brie and jarlsberg sandwiches, chocolate covered strawberries on a skewer, and lots more… i was kind of a pig, truth be told. when i bought my strawberry skewer off a stand on the street, a man at a meat truck next door yelled after me “YOU NO FORGET YOUR MEAT ON STICK!”. i will never forget again.

a few days ago my boyfriend wore this shirt, and i commented on what a nice plaid it was, and how well it fit him. so the next morning, while he was sleeping in, i tip-toed into his closet and helped myself. i’ve been meaning to try a few plaid-on-plaid outfits, and had been lamenting the fact that i don’t own a single plaid shirt. how did it never occur to me that my boyfriend’s proliferation of plaid (honestly, it is 90% of his closet) would come in handy?

with a simple knot at the waist, i suddenly felt like my blouse collection was doubled (this is one of my boyfriend’s pet peeves- i call any button shirt a ‘blouse’. i guess it isn’t manly). when he finally woke up, he was not exactly thrilled by my idea of borrowing his clothes, but i said i would gladly let him wear anything of mine. he said ‘fine, i’m going to start carrying your fancy purses and wearing your shoes’. this i would like to see.

maybe one day soon i can post my boyfriend’s version of this very same outfit, and we can do a ‘who wore it best?’ poll. i hope i can count on your vote!

joelle van dyne: sister wife wardrobe remix

i mentioned last week that i had a 2nd purchase from the uniqlo +j line (other than the skirt in the post here), and that i needed some opinions on it. so here we have it- what i deem the “sister wife dress”- doesn’t it seem like something nicki would wear on ‘big love’? i was feeling a little iffy about it, since it is somewhat loose, and hits at mid-calf. i decided to try styling the dress a few different ways to see how versatile it would be, and here are the results!

this first look is the most obvious to me- simple summer shirtdress with strappy sandals and my favorite necklace to give the waist a little extra definition.

i wanted to see if i could make the dress wearable in the current in-between season, so i added some darker layers to tone down all the white. i think this look is the most ‘me’. (ps i will post a better photo of these shoes soon- just got them in the mail over the weekend on The Best Shoe Day Ever!).

as i went to put the dress back in the closet, i spotted my fur tank top, and thought it would be another option for layering. so, out it came. on the way to put it on, i saw my beaded vest hanging on my dressform, and threw that on too. i think the layering gives the dress a whole different feel, and it pretty much convinced me that it was a dress worth keeping.

what do you think? versatile dress, or too sister-wife-y? (and if so, which sister wife? i’m pretty okay with being Barb..) and one last question- how do you typically decide whether to keep a new purchase?

joelle van dyne: it’s not easy being green

loft woven crinkle skirt, loft racerback vest

wow, this post marks the end of the owls’s stint as guest editors for Live.Love.Loft! we’ve had a lot of fun styling our favorite LOFT pieces this month. don’t forget to enter our giveaway (details here) by either commenting on one of our outfits on LOFT’s blog, or reblogging one!

in this outfit, i’m sporting the woven crinkle skirt, which i was especially happy to find, because it is my very favorite color. yhere’s a little disagreement as to the name of this particular color. it’s the color of my bedroom walls, which behr paints terms ‘meditation’. i like to think of it as ‘grey green’ (which is fun to say) or maybe sea glass green. noel, on the other hand, terms it ‘granny green’.

whatever you want to call the color, i adore it. when i brought the skirt home and put it on, i blended seamlessly with my bedroom walls, bedspread, and more importantly, many things in my closet. i’m probably a little too matchy-matchy, but i don’t care. i enjoyed wearing lots of beloved granny green items all at once.

even my jewelry tends to be various shades of ocean and grass.

owl belt buckle, owl belt

now I’m thinking i ought to swap out my black belt for a green one. this little guy was a brooklyn flea market find last summer. the belt was originally about 2x the size of my waist, and i only just got it fixed. i gold-leafed the silver buckle myself, then distressed it with a stiff brush so some of the silver shows through. looking at this photo, i’m wondering if it should be less distressed? maybe i’ll add more gold leaf. i am always looking for an excuse to do so.
