joelle van dyne: brooklyn jorts

this took a lot longer than i expected, but i’m baaack! these photos are from last friday, which was a 5-star day, in which i got my new sofa delivered AND got the internet successfully installed.. almost 1 month after moving to brooklyn. it has been a long month. there is still a LOT to be done in my apartment, but at least now i have a place to sit. i didn’t foresee how strange and empty the place would feel after moving from a 1-bedroom to a 3-bedroom. first world problems, anyone?

after spending a good hour online friday, the man-friend and i decided to make our wonderful day even better by walking the dogs to prospect park.

here we are! just last night i was showing him these photos, and he asked why i never post his picture here. “because it’s all about ME” was my response, but today i feel like sharing.

i’ve been wearing this pair of cut-off jorts all through the process of moving. i guess it’s like a new brooklyn uniform. i had to finally wash them last week, yet i kept searching for them each morning, running through the apartment yelling “where are my JORTS?! i NEED them to LIVEEEE!!!”. it was such a relief to get them back. they’re nice and loose around my thighs, which, for me, is an important, yet hard-to-find feature in shorts.

hex nut bracelet

i fancied-up my jorts with this shiny new hex-nut bracelet. noel and some other friends and i made these in brooklyn bridge park last week, after a failed attempt to see ‘breakfast at tiffany’s’. i’ve been having so much fun making simple jewelry this summer. i brought home a bag full of colorful plastic beads from ohio, and can’t wait to dig into it.

joelle van dyne: the tide rises

i hope you all had a nice labor day weekend. mine was nice and relaxing, but also kind of sad because it feels like summer is officially ending. it’s starting to feel cold in the shade, and since the school year is starting again, i’m back to working my usual job, plus teaching and working as a research assistant. busy busy.

these photos are from a trip i took with the man-friend to lake placid in upstate ny. we were expecting a deserted town with lots of quiet outdoor activities- hiking, boating, swimming, etc. but what we found was a hopping tourist town! we were getting out of nyc to avoid being stuck among swarms of people, but it sure didn’t work out that way.

anxious to get away from all the other vacationers, we drove around to take in the scenery. at one point we found a place off the side of the highway where it looked like cars had been parked. so we pulled over, and started off into the woods for a hike. soon enough, we came to a clearing where we saw the above view.

the dogs and i took off immediately for the water. it was clear and warm, and the beach was completely deserted. we returned to this spot on several days, and had the best time relaxing on a picnic blanket, drawing (well, more like coloring), reading, snacking, snapping photos, and taking the occasional nap (leading to a wicked sun burn for me).

chloe sunglasses

in keeping with my usual vacation costuming theme, i got slightly dressed up for the beach. i had totally forgot about this skirt, which was hidden in the back of my closet. i got it in high school from a thrift store- i think it originally came from anthropologie, but i’m not sure. anyway, it’s a nice light silk and i wish i’d worn it more this summer.

the straw hat was purchased in a tourist gift shop on my 2nd day of vacation. when i went to pay for it, the girl at the register said “these hats are GREAT! they’re selling like hot cakes”. i then took a look around the store, and realized i was the only one there without an AARP card. but hey, it kept my nose from developing it’s usual shade of vacation red, so i’m happy.

looking at these photos makes me wish i was back on this beach so badly. pictures like these come in handy on days when i’m super stressed and overwhelmed with work- i look at them and remember that there’s a deserted beach just a few hours away, where everything is quiet and calm.

brook and lyn surrounded body necklace, diane von furstenberg skirt, miu miu tie dye bag, anthropologie shoes

i will try to keep this post quick today (which is hard for me!) as noel and i are scrambling at work right now. i know i said that last week i’d be showing you some other ways that i’ve been wearing my brook & lyn surrounded body necklace- so today i have photos of just one of the ways i’ve been wearing it, and will show one more on friday.

brook and lyn surrounded body necklace

as you can see, this little beauty makes an excellent belt. though my pattern-phobic self was a little unsure about this outfit, i felt the necklace tied together the polka dots and the paisley, and made a nice focal point.

i’ve been feeling bored with my wardrobe lately, so have been digging in the back of the closet, pulling out things i don’t usually favor, and trying to see them in a new way. this blouse and skirt were two such items, and i love them so much more together than apart.

the blouse is from jcrew, and the skirt is diane von furstenberg- two brands which i like, but typically find too preppy for my taste. but when i mixed the patterns, i thought it gave off a sort of dries van noten vibe.

ysl arty ovale ring

with the addition of some large vintage earrings (from my mom!), and a handful of jewels, i felt safely non-prepster.

anthropologie sandals

to really go all-out with my patterned outfit, i wore these anthropologie sandals. i got them a year or two ago, and don’t wear them often- they have a stacked wood heel, which i am not a fan of. but i’ve been realizing they’re insanely comfortable, so they’ve been getting more wear. and i like the way their pink tone compliments my OPI shrek nail polish.

well, this was… kinda short?? i don’t know why i always write so much- i find it much easier to get a point across by writing than by talking. are the rest of you bloggers the same way? anyway, back to work for me!
