joelle van dyne: on safari

DIY wrap skirt, steve madden nataliaa

i quite enjoyed playing around with a mix of prints in the last outfit i posted, so i decided to try it again, only this time with an animal theme. sometimes i like to see how many animals i can get into one outfit, and in this one, there are quite a few.

zara zebra blouse

perhaps my favorite animals in this outfit are the zebras on this blouse. i like that the print is large and sparse. it makes it less difficult to wear for a print-phobe like myself.

the snake-print wrap skirt was made by me last summer using some diane von furstenberg silk jersey fabric. putting this on made me want to pull out my sewing machine and get to work again. i have 3 fabrics to use up, and cannot commit to any design for them! i should probably just make some more circle skirts and be done with it.

owl belt

it looks like my owl belt needs another layer of gold leaf. i gilded and then distressed this buckle, but i think i was too heavy on the distressing. luckily it is a very easy fix.

lea stein owl brooch

i added two lea stein owl brooches into the mix. i would really like to collect enough of these to cover an entire vest with them. for now i have three… maybe if i got a very tiny vest i could accomplish my goal sooner.

i love this owl’s intense red eyes. yesterday i saw a preview for the last harry potter movie, and it made me wish i could have a pet owl all over again. a couple years ago i did some extensive research on the possibility of taming and training an owl to keep as a pet. i was quite serious about it, but alas, owls are meant for the wild. so i content myself with these pretty brooches.

american apparel hat

the last animal in this outfit is much more subtle than the others: a weasel. in the form of my flat-ironed, wet-looking weasly hair (my friend raina described it this way and i think it is exactly right). i got a keratin treatment on my hair yesterday, which involves ironing the hair until it is flat as can be. i have to walk around with the wet look for 24-48 hours before i can wash it out and hopefully look like my normal self again. i will report back on my results on friday!

one part of the treatment is that you’re not supposed to do anything to put kinks in the hair- no tucking behind the ears, no clips or ponytails, no big headphones, and NO HATS. so this hat was for photo purposes only. i didn’t leave it on long enough to make any dents, but i was too embarrassed of the weasel hair to show it in all the photos.

my shoes, sadly, do not have any kind of animal print. they ARE leather, so maybe that counts. i’m really happy with these shoes anyway- i just got them from steve madden, and they are really comfortable for 4” heels. also, a tip if you are interested in them- they are a lot less money in stores than online.

in writing this post i am realizing that i could’ve added SO many more animals to this outfit. i’m disappointed in myself. a fish necklace, octopus ring, owl bracelet, and maybe some leopard-print nail art. le sigh. i will have to try harder next time.
