joelle van dyne: cinco de mayo

i call this my cinco de mayo outfit not because i wore it on the 5th of may, but because, when i wore it, a passerby said to me “i like your outfit! you look very cinco de mayo”.

mexican skirt, peasant blouse, poet sleeves

bangles, bead bracelets, turquoise bracelet

vintage mexican skirt

this vintage skirt is one of those never-weather-appropriate items; the colors are summery, but the skirt is very heavy. you can see why in the photos- while some of the patterned stripes are woven, a lot of them are sewn on top of the fabric. so it is a thick weave + layers of ribbon, yarn and sequins on top. it isn’t especially flattering to wear, but i am willing to overlook that.

i added my favorite filmy vintage blouse on top to balance out the heaviness of the skirt, and probably inadvertently added to the ‘cinco de mayo costume’ aspect of it. so i already know what i’ll be wearing on 5-5-2012.

vintage skirt and blouse, marni sandals, bracelets from h&m, jcrew, and vintage, etsy and vintage necklaces
