joelle van dyne: throw your hands in the air

do you notice my semi-grungy look here? and the angsty expression i’m making (and/or attempting to make)? that’s because this outfit, my friends, is inspired by the greatest of all decades: the 1990s, aka, 10 years of making rebellious faces and wearing baggy clothes, cut-off fingerless gloves, and stocking caps.

i found myself going through my closet recently, hoping to pull out something that would make me look like this:

or at least, sort of like this. the reason 1990s fashion has been seeping into my brain is, i’ve realized, a girl in my lab at school who clearly favors this decade when she gets dressed every day. her hair is cut in an angled bob, straightened, and covered with a knit hat, always. she puts black liner on the top AND bottom of her eyes. and she wears low-rise, wide-leg jeans with tight shirts. i didn’t think i was a fan of this look, but i guess she wore me down!

my own outfit isn’t as 90s as i would like, though it does stay true to the grunge look in some subtle ways, in that i’m wearing a sweatshirt with the neckline sloppily cut open, and the necessary gloves. for some reason they made me want to keep waving my arms around to show them off, as you see above, till my man-friend told me to stop doing that because it looked ridiculous.
i’m trying to wean myself of the faux-hair-fixing pose you will see on every fashion blog in the world, and i need to come up with something else to do with my hands! i think next time i’ll start carrying a glass of water in each hand, like jack from 30 rock.
